MWH Recognized by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Contractor Safety and Occupational Health Gold Award

Broomfield, Colo., May 18, 2009 – MWH, the wet infrastructure sector leader and global provider of environmental engineering, construction and strategic consulting services, has been awarded the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Omaha District Contractor Safety and Occupational Health Gold Award for its outstanding safety performance while constructing four military airfield facilities in Colorado Springs, Colo.

As part of the project, MWH constructed a 62,000-square-foot Arrival and Departure Airfield Control Group (ADACG) building, a military version of an airport passenger terminal capable of processing 1,200 military personnel at one time.  Additionally, MWH constructed a 17,000-square-foot facility to provide a marshalling area for quick combat team deployment, along with an
entry control point/guard house for managing access into the ADACG site and 250-KW generator building with an industrial lift station. Some high-risk activities included installing 25-foot pre-cast concrete wall panels, as well as placing a 62,000-square-foot slab on grade concrete, 40,146 square yards of 8-inch concrete marshalling area, and 50,000 tons of base course/rapid drainage layer material. MWH also excavated and installed 5,000 linear feet of force main sewer piping and associated utilities for the four buildings.

“Our commitment to the highest safety standards is a focus of our daily procedures, and we’re proud to have been recognized by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for our work in Colorado Springs,” said Joseph D. Adams, Jr., president of MWH Constructors. “MWH employees put safety first at construction sites across the world, resulting in an outstanding track record and recognition.”

MWH developed and implemented the “3 A’s” of safety – Attitude, Awareness and Action – an innovative approach to empowering employees to take a proactive stance on safety.  Using this approach, this project recorded zero accidents. In 2008, the MWH overall project safety record amounted to 334 consecutive days and 116,912 exposure hours without a single Lost Work Day Incident or Occupation Safety and Health Recordable Incident.

MWH Constructors ranks among the top 10 U.S. contractors in wet infrastructure and was founded in 1993 to manage MWH’s design-build and at-risk construction projects.  MWH Constructors has received numerous safety awards, most recently being named one of the nation’s safest contractors by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and was recognized twice by the University of South Florida’s Safety Florida Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award for its work in Cape Coral.
